Diamond Cut
The Cut of a diamond is a work of art that reveals its brilliance. The GIA grading system ensures that each diamond is cut to perfection, maximizing its fire and scintillation. In the world of luxury, precision is paramount, and at Wakefields, precision is guaranteed with GIA's expertise. Diamonds are graded as excellent, very good, good, fair and poor, with proportion, polish, durability and craftsmanship all taken into consideration when deciding on the quality of the stone.
Diamond Colour
The colour of a diamond is an important part of the decision making process when searching for the perfect stone. Diamonds are ranked on a scale of colour, with ‘D’ colourless considered the best in quality because they best reflect more light and brilliance when paired with excellent cut and clarity.
D-F - Colourless | G-J – Near Colourless | K-M - Faint | N-R – Very Light | S-Z - Light
Diamond Carat
Carat Weight, the final C, dictates the diamond's size.Carat is a unit of weight that equals to 0.2 grams. That means a 5 carat diamond weights 1 gram. Carat weight relates to the size of a diamond, which is one of the most visible things about a stone. How large a stone looks, though, also depends on how it is cut. Stones that are cut too deep may weigh more, but they will not look any bigger face-up. That is why it is just as important to consider a stone’s cut, as it is its carat weight.
Diamond Clarity
A diamond’s clarity is ranked on a scale by the GIA. Each stone is scrutinized and ranked according to the visibility of inclusions and imperfections within its structure. This process ensures that only the most flawless and pristine selections make it into our fine jewellery collections.
FL: Flawless. No inclusions or blemishes are visible to a skilled grader using 10× magnification
IF: Internally Flawless. No inclusions and only blemishes are visible to a skilled grader using 10× magnification
VVS1 / VVS2: Very, Very Slightly Included. Inclusions are difficult for a skilled grader to see under 10× magnification
VS1 / VS2: Very Slightly Included. Inclusions are minor and range from difficult to somewhat easy for a skilled grader to see under 10x magnification
SI1 / SI2: Slightly Included.Inclusions are noticeable to a skilled grader under 10x magnification
I1 / I2 / I3: Included. Inclusions are obvious under 10× magnification and may affect transparency and brilliance
